Do you love taking adventurous getaways on the weekend? Then you’re probably looking for an active SUV, like the Ford Explorer or Chevy Traverse.
While both are popular vehicles, you may be wondering which one is most ideally suited to your lifestyle around the Virginia Beach, Norfolk, or Chesapeake, VA, areas.
The team at Cavalier Ford Greenbrier wants to help you decide, so we’ve compared the Explorer vs. Traverse on the points of engine specs, all-weather handling, and driver-assist features. Go ahead and check it out now!
Ford Explorer vs Chevy Traverse Engine Specs
One of our favorite things about the Ford Explorer and Chevy Traverse is that they offer plenty of power. In fact, both vehicles come equipped with an available V6 engine. Based on their engine specs, however, you may get a bit more energy from the V6 engine available in the Explorer:

3.0L EcoBoost® V6 |
3.6L V6 |

266 lb-ft of torque |

Depending on whether you choose the enhanced turbocharged V6 engine for your Ford Explorer, it’ll produce 70-150 more horsepower than the V6 engine in the Traverse. Due to the additional power output, the Explorer is also able to tow 600 more pounds than the Traverse can.
If you’re going to be towing a boat to the beach in the summertime, you may prefer the strength of the Ford SUV.
All-Weather Traction Control: Explorer vs Traverse
One of the great things about living in Southern Virginia is that we get to experience all four seasons. Of course, that also means you need a vehicle that can deliver high-quality traction control, whatever the weather. You’ll get that from both the Ford Explorer and Chevy Traverse.
The two SUVs give you the option of an available all-wheel drive (Traverse), or Intelligent 4WD with Terrain Management System™ (Explorer). These drivetrains continuously and automatically adjust torque distribution to keep you moving forward with added confidence.
They also each have a drive mode select system, which lets you manually choose a drive setting to suit your needs. The Traverse comes with four settings: Front-wheel drive, All-wheel drive, Off-Road, and Tow/Haul.
The Explorer, on the other hand, gives you even more options to pick from. These are:
- Sport
- Trail
- Eco
- Deep Snow/Sand
- Tow/Haul
- Normal
With more specific drive mode settings, drivers in the Explorer may find that their ride is even more carefully tailored to their needs than those in the Traverse.
Driver Assist Feature Comparison
When you hit the open road, or set out on your daily commute, it’s nice to have a set of driver-assist features riding shotgun. These are designed to increase driver awareness and add even more safety and confidence to every drive.
Both the Ford Explorer and Chevy Traverse are equipped with some high-tech driver-assist and smart safety features, including:
- Lane keeping
- Blind spot monitoring
- Forward collision mitigation
- Automatic emergency braking
The Explorer makes these features standard, while they’re only available with an upgrade in the Traverse.
Both models also have features that can help you park with added accuracy, like a rearview camera and rear parking sensors. The Ford Explorer takes this even further with its available Active Park Assist 2.0 feature. It provides prompts to shift, brake, and accelerate, while automatically steering you into an available parking space.
Without a similar feature, drivers in the Chevy Traverse may struggle a bit more while parallel parking on a busy street.
